Workshop 1: Sensory Club

Build on your child’s strength to develop play and creativity.

Through play, we build relationship and shapes the brain like chewing gum as we massage and masticate how to play and how to manipulate objects.

When playing we create plasticity in the brain. To illustrate plasticity, imagine making an impression of a coin in a lump of clay.

In order for the impression of the coin to appear in the clay, changes must occur in the clay — the shape of the clay changes as the coin is pressed into the clay. Similarly, the neural circuitry in the brain must reorganize in response to experience though play and sensory stimulation.

In other words, making autism our best friend and not our worst enemy. By going to their part of the bridge and building a relationship based on their motivations and stereotypes you can make yourself approachable and most of all they will trust you. Remember that autism, is a disorder of relationship and only by remediating to the social relationship, you will be able to go at the core of the disability.
