b024660lintim51bHi, I’m Linda Timhadjelt and I’m a specialist teacher in ASD. I’m passionate about supporting families and children affected by Autism. After the diagnosis, we feel overwhelmed, lost and in need of a miracle. Can it happen? No, I would not talk about miracle but action, striving, acceptance, love, compassion, non-judgement of our kids’ perception. These words are so easy to write but so hard to apply in our everyday life as it implies change.

Changing our child with autism? No … but changing our attitude to Autism. That is first real step to achieve, this means changing our state of mind, changing our perspective and our priorities. This means spending more time in my child’s world and less in mine…

Is that a sacrifice? No, it is an investment for your future life because after play and learning fundamentals communication skills, your child will be more independent and will learn to problem solved as his brain will allow him to do that.

  • Indeed, our kids are different, they learn things out of order. The key is to be able to open their nervous system for learning to take place, we need to motivate them, and we need to make our world an irresistible place to be in.

  • Thus, the reason why we, as parents need to prioritize our wellbeing and happiness before being able to climb up that mountain with our kids . We need to be able to hold ourselves with ease, comfort and peace.

  • They have six senses that are not working properly (touch (tactile), sight (vision), Sound (auditory), Smell (olfactory), and Taste (gustatory). Also Movement (vestibular) and Body Position (proprioception). The 7th sense is to feel you as a mum or dad, that is why one of my mission is to work on your emotions.

  • Our kids live with a high degree of fear and / or anxiety. They have sensory systems that often do not serve them well, delivering information too big, too small or distorted. The way their neurology processes sensory information is often delayed and / or filled with reverberation. Many of them have a thinking style that is literal, concrete and visual. To complicate everyday life, none of these things are stable.

  • They cannot predict from day to day their experience of the sensory impacts from the world around them along with their ability to take in and process information from the people in that world. This is the reason why you have to be calm, breathe, slow, plan ahead and explain them how their day will be.
